In this podcast:
Someone is turning thirty, so to celebrate, I have thirty tips for someone turning thirty although the age is pretty arbitrary, and my advice probably isn’t worth much
30 tips for someone turning 30 (the age is pretty arbitrary):
- Enjoy your current vocation (single, married, with kids, without)
- Grass is greener where you water it – invest in your current vocation
- Be aware of your spiritual parenthood (to your non-biological children)
- Seek advice from other people.
- Don’t always take their advice
- Don’t worry about things that don’t matter (like clothes).
- (Still Don’t worry but) Pay attention to things that do matter (like relationships)
- Be financially responsible (watch some Dave Ramsey YouTube videos)
- Most anything electronic is going to drop in value
- Nobody cares what kind of car you drive. And if they do, then you shouldn’t care about their opinion.
- Don’t compare yourself to others
- Take pride in your work – do your best. Work is part of your vocation, not just a means to an end, but an end itself
- Take pictures/videos (you can always delete them later, but you can’t go back in time to take pictures after-the-fact)
- Go on a retreat once a year
- Teach what you know
- Learn what you don’t know. Don’t stop learning – (books, documentaries, podcasts, classes)
- Read the New Testament (took me years to do)
- Serve, volunteer (church, coach t-ball, soup kitchen, …)
- Go to daily Mass
- Complain less
- Donate to charities (this isn’t something to put off until you are older)
- Ideas are worthless – Execution is what matters – do something
- Don’t quit – if it’s what you are called to do, don’t give up
- Quit – If it isn’t what you are supposed to be doing,
- Do the right thing (not the easy thing)
- Be part of a community
- Try new things (foods, locations, adventures)
- Try new (legitimate) types of prayer
- Say, “thanks”
- In the words of Baz Luhrmann, “Wear Sunscreen” (Episode 67 of Doctor Doctor)
